Best Class for Casual and Returning Players in WoW Forever

If you’re coming back after years away and you only get a few evenings a week, the “best” class isn’t the one at the top of a tier list. It’s the one that forgives mistakes, doesn’t make you die and run back from the graveyard every ten minutes, and that you’ll actually enjoy logging into after a long day.

Here’s a quick picker, our honest take on each class for limited-time players, and the race limits to check before you hit Create.

The 3-question class picker

1. Do you mostly want to play solo, or with a regular group?

  • Mostly solo: lean toward a class with a pet or strong self-healing (Hunter, Warlock, Paladin).
  • Regular group (friends, partner, guild): anything works. Think about question 3.

2. Up close or from a distance?

  • Distance: Hunter, Warlock, Mage, Priest.
  • Up close: Paladin, Warrior, Rogue, Shaman, Druid (Druid can do both).

3. Do you want to tank or heal for a group someday?

  • Heal: Priest, Paladin, Shaman, Druid.
  • Tank: Warrior, Paladin, Druid.
  • Neither: Hunter, Warlock, Mage, Rogue.

Most forgiving picks for rusty players

Hunter. Your pet holds the monster’s attention while you shoot from long range. If you get the pull wrong, the pet usually buys you time. Beta players rated Hunter highly for solo leveling. [VERIFY IN-GAME: Hunters were tuned down on Oct 28 during name reservation, with lower Aspect of the Hawk and Trueshot Aura values per Wowhead. It should still be a forgiving class, but the pace may be a bit slower than beta suggested.]

Warlock. A demon pet plus spells that drain health back to you means fewer breaks to eat and drink. Also rated highly for solo play on several beta tier lists. [VERIFY IN-GAME]

Paladin. Sturdy, heals itself, wears heavy armor, and can heal or tank later. It’s slower at killing things early on, but it rarely dies. A good pick if you want one character that can do a bit of everything. [VERIFY IN-GAME]

Mage levels quickly once you’re comfortable, but it’s fragile and rewards careful play (keeping distance, freezing enemies in place). Great if you remember how it works, harder if you’re rusty. [VERIFY IN-GAME]

Classes that are harder when you’re rusty

These aren’t bad classes. They just ask more of you in a short session.

  • Warrior: strong later with good gear, but often described as the slowest and most punishing to level solo. Expect more downtime. [VERIFY IN-GAME]
  • Rogue: fun and great in PvP, but no pet and no self-heals, so mistakes cost more.
  • Druid: can do everything, which also means more to learn. Rewarding if you enjoy that.

Priest and Shaman sit in the middle: very welcome in groups, a little slower solo. [VERIFY IN-GAME: launch-week solo pace for both.]

Race and class limits to check first

WoW Forever opened up new race and class pairings, but some come with limits.

  • Blizzard lists new combos including Orc Mages, Troll Warlocks, Undead Paladins, Human Hunters, Gnome Priests, and Dwarf Shamans.
  • Reports from beta say Horde Paladins are Undead only and Alliance Shamans are Dwarf only. [VERIFY IN-GAME at character creation.]
  • The new Skyborne race (starts on Zephras Isle, levels 1–12): Blizzard says Horde-aligned Windshapers can become Shaman and Alliance-aligned High-Order Skyborne can become Mages. Fan sites list a few other classes too. [VERIFY IN-GAME: the full Skyborne class list for each faction. Skyborne also needs the Heroic Pack or higher.]

Don’t overthink it

Tier lists from beta only covered levels 20 to 30, and Blizzard is still tuning classes. The class you find fun will get played more often, and a class you play is a class that levels. If you’re torn, roll the one you remember liking years ago.
